Street-based youth work, or

MoNo

Mobile youth work (MoNo) is one of the methods of preventive youth work, aimed at establishing and maintaining trusting relationships with young people, supporting their development, and enhancing their ability to cope with everyday life and make decisions.

While open youth work is primarily carried out in youth centers, mobile youth work takes place where young people actually spend their time. These environments can include streets and other public spaces, parks, shopping centers, playgrounds, areas around schools, and digital environments (e.g., Snapchat, Discord, etc.).

Mobile youth work is divided into five main areas of activity:
  • work in public spaces
  • individual work with young people
  • group work
  • community work
  • networking

Learn more about MoNo on the website of the Education and Youth Board.

Mobile Youth Work Bus

From June 1 to September 1,the MoNo bus—a youth center on wheels—will be traveling around Tartu as part of a pilot project, bringing youth services to young people at their everyday hangouts.

This is a specially adapted van that provides young people with a safe and supportive environment in areas where youth services may not yet reach or where young people do not typically go on a daily basis.

On the bus and in the surrounding area, young people can play board games and outdoor games, use video game consoles, do crafts, and spend time in comfortable seating and social areas. Mobile youth workers provide young people with daily support, counseling, and, if necessary, referrals to appropriate services.

The MoNo bus is open every day from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Digital Outreach

The goal of digital youth work is to reach young people in digital environments. It primarily supports young people who have limited access to in-person youth work or who spend a significant portion of their time online.

The digital youth worker connects with young people on the platforms they use every day (such as Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitch), shares information, provides initial counseling, and creates a safe and supportive space for communication. In addition, various online activities are conducted to give young people a sense of participation and belonging.

In addition to counseling and information sharing, digital youth work also involves various activities:

  • game nights (e.g., CS2, Rocket League, Fortnite, Jackbox)
  • quizzes
  • “Chat & Chill” conversations on everyday topics
  • etc.

The digital career guidance service is being developed as part of the Erasmus+ project “Youth Work 360° – Mobile, Digital, Inclusive and Accessible.” The results of the pilot project will help shape sustainable digital youth work solutions that truly meet the needs of young people.

Collaboration and Internship Opportunities

You can come to the Tartu Youth Work Center to observe mobile youth work in action and get a better idea of how this approach actually works.

The MoNo bus can also be used to bring youth workers to events aimed at young people, in order to support these activities and bring youth work to young people in their own environment.
