Applications for this summer's Tartu Youth Work Camp groups began on Monday

Starting Monday, May 12, all young people aged 13-19 who are registered residents of Tartu will have the opportunity to apply for the Tartu Youth Work Camp 2025 groups. This summer, there will be an even wider selection of groups and employers than before, so everyone is sure to find something that suits them.

This year, there are over 100 youth brigade spots available for 13-14-year-olds, giving more young people the opportunity to join the brigade. Secondly, this year, in cooperation with the Tallinn Student Brigade and the NGO National Defence Regiment, there will be brigade groups focusing on national defence education, which will also include participation in the national defence camp held from July 18-20. Groups that are themed around national defence have a corresponding note.

This summer, the camp has several new, exciting, and diverse employers. For example, young people are welcome to join the cemetery group, where they will work together to tidy up various cemeteries and gravesites in Tartu. Another completely new group is the nursing home group, which brings together different generations and allows young people to contribute to the daily lives of the elderly and bring new energy to the nursing home. There is also excitement in the nature game group, which helps with maintenance work at both the Tartu Nature House and the Toy Museum. Among the groups outside the city, the Elistvere group is planned for the first time, during which volunteers can contribute to the maintenance of the animal park. Of course, we must not forget the Rally Estonia group, which offers a glimpse behind the scenes of this major international event and the opportunity to help with maintenance work. Another new addition is the Hellenurme group, which will be doing maintenance work at the Hellenurme Mill Museum.

Naturally, among the youth work camp groups, one can also find familiar groups and employers from previous years, such as kindergartens (this year there are even three youth work camp groups in different Tartu city kindergartens), Tartu Oskar Luts City Library, Tartu Market, Tartu Youth Work Centre, Circle K, GoBus, Hummuli, Väetee, Vormsi, Tartu Sport, and the Klaaspärlimäng festival.

Applications for the youth work camp are submitted through the Tartu city portal linnaportaal.tartu.ee and are open until May 18. Speed is not a factor in applying, and all applications submitted within the week are treated equally.

Further information about the camp and application can be found on the website https://tntk.tartu.ee/tartu-noorte-toomalev/

“Let’s start a green-thumbed club!”

With the arrival of spring, there’s a growing desire to be outdoors and do something interesting—something that brings joy, excitement, and sparks curiosity. At the Lillekese Youth Center, we’ve found gardening to be the perfect activity for this. We started one Wednesday by weeding the flower bed in front of the Lille House gate. We divided up the tasks on the spot—one person weeds here, another

The Voice of Youth in the Action Plan

Actively involving young people in developing the youth center’s action plan is an important step in fostering their sense of participation and responsibility. Children aged 7–11 are able to successfully express their interests and ideas when provided with a safe and supportive environment. One effective way to do this is through a monthly brainstorming session, during which young people can freely suggest activities and topics. Young people’s opinions matter and have a real impact on the life of the youth center. In addition to the idea generator, it is important to gather ongoing feedback on daily activities to understand what resonates with young people and what needs to be changed. The youth worker’s role here is to guide: to help make ideas more concrete, then link them to an action plan, and involve partners as needed. Even with younger children, simple tools such as voting, drawing, or discussion circles can be used. In a young person’s life, everything changes very quickly: what was relevant two weeks ago
