In July, the Ilmatsalu community organized a one-day trip to Vormsi Island. Participants gathered early in the morning, before 6:00 a.m., to make sure they caught the ferry on time. They then set off, enjoying the summer scenery through the bus windows. The group of nearly 50 people included both residents of Tartu’s rural areas and young people from the Tartu Youth Work Center. People came on the trip with friends and relatives, and the atmosphere was friendly, cohesive, and curious from the very beginning.
On Vormsi, we were greeted by our local guide, Krista Veisson, who spent the entire day telling fascinating stories about the island’s history and present-day life and led our group to the island’s most important and beautiful spots. It was interesting to get a glimpse of island life and see a community that moves at a different pace compared to the mainland. It was also great to see the beautiful and well-maintained trash shelters dotted here and there along the island’s roads, which young people from the Tartu Youth Work Brigade have helped maintain in previous years.
Throughout the day, there were great conversations, new insights, and a shared joy of discovery. On several occasions, people already discussed the next outing and suggested that next time we could all go to the theater together.
The outing was organized by the Tartu Youth Work Center, the Tähtvere Community Activities Association, and Kultuurireisid.ee. A big thank you to everyone who helped both with the preparations for the trip and in ensuring the day went smoothly and pleasantly. We’d also like to thank all the participants who made this day special with their good spirits and open-mindedness.
