Many exciting events are coming to Ilmatsalu in cooperation with the library.

As 2022 is the Year of Libraries, Ilmatsalu Youth Centre has made it a priority to collaborate even more closely with the Ilmatsalu branch of the Tartu O. Lutsu City Library. The aim of this cooperation is to develop a sense of community among young people and residents of the area. At the first meeting, we planned activities for the entire year 2022.

However, let's start by organizing an information day for the community on crisis preparedness at Ilmatsalu Library on April 21st. We invited a safety expert from the Tartu district of Naiskodukaitse (Women's Voluntary Defence Organization) to speak about this topical issue. It turned out that, given the current situation, people are still unclear about how to act if there is no electricity for an extended period, what household crisis supplies should consist of, or more broadly – what is generally meant by a crisis.

Other activities related to the Year of Libraries focus on bringing children and young people closer to books, meaning we offer exciting activities for children and young people that help generate greater interest in reading. For example, together with young people, we create escape games based on children's or youth books, read books together, and interpret their content through various games. On May 13th, the head of the Ilmatsalu Youth Center will also participate in the Living Library discussion held as part of the Prima Vista Literature Festival, introducing both youth work and the youth center. For June, we planned a large pancake-making event in a non-traditional way, using a camping stove, a mess kit, and a campfire, with an adventure game workshop and a reading of the book 'The Great Cake Bake' as a backdrop. Additionally, this autumn we look forward to welcoming writer Kersti Kivirüüt to speak on youth topics and present her book.

This is a brief overview of what is planned for Ilmatsalu during the Year of Libraries. Let's keep some things a secret too 😊

We divided up the tasks on the spot—one person weeds here, another

The Voice of Youth in the Action Plan

Actively involving young people in developing the youth center’s action plan is an important step in fostering their sense of participation and responsibility. Children aged 7–11 are able to successfully express their interests and ideas when provided with a safe and supportive environment. One effective way to do this is through a monthly brainstorming session, during which young people can freely suggest activities and topics. Young people’s opinions matter and have a real impact on the life of the youth center. In addition to the idea generator, it is important to gather ongoing feedback on daily activities to understand what resonates with young people and what needs to be changed. The youth worker’s role here is to guide: to help make ideas more concrete, then link them to an action plan, and involve partners as needed. Even with younger children, simple tools such as voting, drawing, or discussion circles can be used. In a young person’s life, everything changes very quickly: what was relevant two weeks ago
