Youth work through the eyes of young people

In certain circles of society, there is a common belief that activities in youth centers have only a questionable impact on young people. 16-year-old Cassandra has been visiting the Lille youth center for 4 years, while 17-year-old Kauri discovered the youth center only 4 months ago. We ask the young people themselves what they think about the youth center's activities and what impact youth work has had on their lives.

“How did you end up at the youth center? What drew you there or inspired you to come for the first time?”
Cassandra: I came to the Lille youth center about 4-5 years ago when a boy invited me there. At first, it seemed boring because I didn't know anyone. But the next time I went, I made friends, and now I know a lot of people there. Kauri: My friends took me to the youth center. I was inspired by the fact that an old acquaintance whom I hadn't seen in a long time was going to the youth center.

“What was your first impression of the youth center? Did it meet your expectations?”
Cassandra: I didn't know what to expect. At first it seemed scary because everyone knew each other, but I didn't. Now I feel like it's my second home, where the environment is like a family. Kauri: My first experience was great and the environment was friendly.

“What activities or programs are offered at the youth center? Is there anything you particularly enjoy?”
Cassandra: I have been on the organizing team, for example for the Halloween party. I also like the summer water fights and just being in good company. I love volunteering and helping others.
Kauri: I participate in the cooking club. Although I sometimes argue, the activities are fun and educational.

“What are your favorite moments at the youth center?”
Cassandra: The best moments are when friends run up to hug me after being away for several days. I love that I can be myself, communicate freely, and feel the support of the youth workers. Kauri: Halloween night in 2024 was memorable – full of surprises and excellently organized.

“How do you feel about the role of youth workers at the youth center?”
Cassandra: They are like best friends – they help, listen, and calmly guide you when necessary. Kauri: Youth workers are nice, but they know how to show authority when necessary. This inspires respect for them.

“How has going to the youth center helped you develop skills or discover new interests?”
Cassandra: At the youth center, I have made friends and learned how to behave in certain situations. I have also gained the confidence to cook and volunteer to help organize events.
Kauri: Thanks to the youth center, I have become more confident and sociable. I have also discovered my talent for cooking.

“What would you say to someone who thinks that only ‘problem’ young people go to youth centers?”
Cassandra: Parents tend to blame young people, but first they should talk to their children and take a look in the mirror. Kauri: The stereotype of troubled youth is ridiculous because no one is perfect.

“How would you describe the impact of the youth center on your life?”
Cassandra: The youth center has opened my eyes to a new life and made me more confident. I have overcome bullying and know how to help others.
Kauri: The youth center has helped me find confidence and build trusting relationships.

“What role could a youth center play in society?”
Cassandra: A youth center is a safe and warm place to come to at any time.
Kauri: It's the perfect place to relax, meet new people, and forget about the problems of the outside world.

“How has your experience at the youth center helped you think about the future?”
Cassandra: The youth center has supported me mentally and given me the opportunity to try photography, which is my dream. I have also received support here when going on an exchange program.
Kauri: The youth center has helped me understand the importance of leadership and parental roles and inspired me to develop the qualities I need for the future.

The Voice of Youth in the Action Plan

Actively involving young people in developing the youth center’s action plan is an important step in fostering their sense of participation and responsibility. Children aged 7–11 are able to successfully express their interests and ideas when provided with a safe and supportive environment. One effective way to do this is through a monthly brainstorming session, during which young people can freely suggest activities and topics. Young people’s opinions matter and have a real impact on the life of the youth center. In addition to the idea generator, it is important to gather ongoing feedback on daily activities to understand what resonates with young people and what needs to be changed. The youth worker’s role here is to guide: to help make ideas more concrete, then link them to an action plan, and involve partners as needed. Even with younger children, simple tools such as voting, drawing, or discussion circles can be used. In a young person’s life, everything changes very quickly: what was relevant two weeks ago
