Listening to Young People: A Daily Need, Not a Seasonal Campaign

Have you ever felt that your thoughts are not truly heard? Or that someone nods along but doesn't really understand what you want to say? You are not alone. Often, young people's feelings and worries go unnoticed because it's thought that 'it will pass' or 'what worries could young people possibly have?' But your feelings are real, you are important, and your thoughts deserve to be heard.

At the youth center, we are here to truly listen to you – not just during Mental Health Month or a campaign, but at any time. Come and tell your story – whether it's big or small, joyful or difficult. You don't have to carry your worries alone. For us, you are always important.

When to seek support?… When to offer support?

Have you noticed that you or a friend have been feeling different lately? Sometimes small changes can be signs that something big is happening. Here are some things to look out for in yourself or a friend:

  • Persistent sadness or hopelessness: if you feel sad for an extended period and cannot view the future positively, or if you observe the same in a friend.
  • Withdrawal: when you no longer feel like pursuing your hobbies or spending time with friends.
  • Behavioral changes: sudden irritability, insomnia or, conversely, fatigue, and a decline in academic performance can be signs that something needs attention.
  • Change in communication: if you withdraw or unexpectedly start sharing many of your worries.
  • Clearly asking for help: if someone directly says they feel bad, or mentions stress and anxiety, it is a clear sign that they need to be heard. If you feel you cannot or do not know how to offer support, you can come together to seek help.

If this sounds familiar, know that it's not wrong to ask for help or to offer it. If you don't know where to start, come to the youth center to talk – we are here to listen and help both you and your friend! 😊

Mental Health Month reminds us all that noticing, listening to, and caring for one another should not be limited to just one month – it is an everyday and essential part of life.

Come talk, I'm here for you

A Children's Day bursting with joy and youthful energy!

The theme of this year’s Child Protection Day was the question: “A young person speaks—are you listening?” The need to be seen, heard, and truly listened to became clear right from the first preparatory meeting, where young volunteers had the chance to share which topics they consider important in the daily lives of children and young people. “Let’s start a green-thumbed club!”

With the arrival of spring, there’s a growing desire to be outdoors and do something interesting—something that brings joy, excitement, and sparks curiosity. At the Lillekese Youth Center, we’ve found gardening to be the perfect activity for this. We started one Wednesday by weeding the flower bed in front of the Lille House gate. We divided up the tasks on the spot—one person weeds here, another
